it may also just need the connectors cleaned good and dielectric grease plastered to the connector before placing back on (keep the corrosion away).

Not true, there's also the VSS. :p

Anthony, it's a big connector, on the passenger side of the transmission I believe. A bunch of wires coming out of it. The bulbs are fine. It's the neutral safety switch, or the wiring going back to the lights. Tell me if that autodimming mirror that he installed undims when you put it in reverse. If it does, the problem is somewhere from where he tapped into it, back to the lights.

How can I tell if it dims or not if it only dims at night and I live in a dark area in a still-unregistered car? =_=

It's going to take a bit of fighting with the old man to get the Merc in the garage, but it's something I have to do. Gotta figure out what the hell I'm going to plug the cats with, too. =\

Plug cats with mighty putty, or equivelent.
Put finger on sensor on back side of mirror (side that faces the windshield). With key in on position, shift into reverse. If it undims, then the problem is where he spliced in. If it doesn't, it's the neutral safety switch.

Mirror stays that weird Atlantic Ocean-green tint when it's in park, reverse, neutral or OD. Dunno about D or 1, but yeah... so I guess it's the neutral switch?

then replace the neutral safety switch.

rockauto.com has them for $33 or $43 for the motorcraft one.

Was the switch on its way out, or does it just need to be tapped with a screwdriver or something...?

By the way, did you break the brake lockout switch or disable it? I find it kind of unsettling that I can just put the car in gear without touching the brakes.

that car never had a break lockout switch to begin with it's a 83. newer ones had them. i got that nss from the junkyard out of a aod tranny that has been sitting outside in all the weather so yeah it's probably no good. just get a new one.

Jeeze, it's almost as bad as my other friend's '84 AE86 Corolla that you can start without pressing the clutch in.

Well, I'll get a new clutch switch in due time. The primary concern right now is saving up the $600 or so it will cost Paula to insure the car for the year, and the $130 or so it will cost to register the vehicle due to its weight class and wheelbase. It literally cost me TWICE as much to put the '86 Merc on the road at the MVC than it did my '85 Buick Century.

Good thing that NJ got rid of safety inspection. Reverse lights out will equal an "advisory inspection", but it will still get a 2-year sticker on the window.

....ONCE THE EXHAUST LEAK IS FIXED.

There isn't a lockout switch. And there wasn't one on your 86. That BS didn't happen until the 90s with the panther.

Strange, I remember it not wanting to go into gear unless the brakes were applied in the old Merc. Oh well, maybe it was just me. I only owned that car for maybe 3 months tops, and it was 2 years ago. I know for a FACT the Century wouldn't go into gear without the brakes applied.

My old man is suggesting using 'hydraulic cement' to fix the cats instead of mighty putty/quicksteel since he has plenty of that and buying putty costs money... o.0

Who knows, maybe I'll bite. My friend sealed the rotted floor of her Escort ZX2 with cement, lol.

Personally, I find the newfangled brake-shifter interlock on newer cars just a bit annoying. I keep grabbing the gear selector in our Cavalier and wondering why I can't move it, then having to slog my brain into remembering that I've got to put my foot on the brake first.
