    would a 400 c.u fit my 84 merc?

Would a 400 out of a 79 lincoln continental fit in my 84 grand marquis?, I can get the car off my grand father for relly cheap, its not in relly good shape so i want to use it for parts i want to use the front seats and consol out of it as well, the engine runs good so i would like to put it in my merc,

I remember riding around in that car when i was little, it was fast, my grandpa ownd it since '79, i would like to restore it but it needs everything since it has been sitting for over 10 yrs and would coast me a lot

You need four things to make it fit. Time, money, patience and tools.

I don't know much about the 400M motors, but I think you'd be better off with a 460, or stroking a 351W to the 4.00x4.00 demensions of the 400M

Remember that this is his grandfather's car. He may be wanting to do it as a tribute. Or the novelty.

Who gives a fuck? Do it. If a 460 will fit a 400 will fit. Good luck on headers, but stock logs should do just fine.

However, I need to argue you on it being fast. My fiancee has a '79 Mark V and it's slow as fuck. Lots of torque, but it's still a three ton car. I think if you'd do some upgrades while the motor is out, it'd be a blast. I'm pretty sure you'd need an E4OD from behind a 460 to fit it, though.

The 4"x4" bore/stroke gives it the "square block" reference you'll hear. If you're rebuilding, throw in some highER compression pistons to put it up around 9.5:1 or 10:1. Then have the heads ported and polished... Edelbrock intake and carb... and that thing would scream.

Oh- you could use the C4/6 (don't recall which) behind the 400 if you want, but I think finding an overdrive transmission would be teh kewlness.

I didn't mean to say not to do it, I was just giving him possibly cheaper/easier alternatives. A 400ci motor would be a creative project, and if you could make it work, especially with the mods Freshmeat mentioned, that '84 would fly. Sorry if you interpreted my post the wrong way.

I think it'd kick ass. It's a very strong motor even at the stock rating of 169hp (don't know torque numbers). A little compression and some clean-up of the stock heads would do wonders on that engine. That's what I wanted to do to Andree's Mark V, but we don't have the time and money for it right now.

                Hi

You need to fit the heads from an Austarilian 302 Cleveland, next best would be from a 70/71 351C 4V.

All you ever wanted to know about tweaking a 400M

...or he can save himself the time and cost of finding those heads and install a set of $123 9:1 pistons, then have his original heads ported/polished and milled a little bit.

Also, the motor mounts are different. Same as a 460, I reckon...

A 400 should bolt into a Panther just fine. It is not near as heavy as a 460. It is too easy to get 400HP+ from a 400. You already have large enough ports and valves. Any intake that fits a 351C will bolt onto a 400 with an adapter. 351C 4V heads would be awesome with 400 cubes. 450HP+ would be easy.
You can bolt a C6 or a C4 up to a 400 with the correct belhousing. There were C4 transmissions used behind 351M motors from the factory. The 351M and 400 use the same block, heads and rods with a different crank and different pistons.

460 and 400 use different motor mounts but the same distributors and transmission bellhousing pattern.

                            429/460 block

A 400 uses the 2 bosses on each side like the other small blocks do.

                              Very tempting...

Also tempting to just find a 400 block to build with forged slugs, and drop my good cleveland heads on there
