    Coolant leak

So Im checking things under the hood and noticed the plastic coolant tank was empty, filled it up and bam coolant leak down by the tranny. Didnt happen till I filled up the tank cause Ive been looking underneath every day at my tranny leak. Radiator has plenty of coolant in it, checked that last week and it was full. Any thoughts? Figure it has somethin to do w/ bottoming out last month and some other cooler connected to the radiator?

Could be intake manifold, heater core, EGR coolant hoses.

As far as I can tell its something connected to that plastic reservoir cause it seems like it leaks until the reservoir is empty then stops.

The only thing connected to the coolant tank is the radiator- it's all in the front of the engine compartment. The tank could be leaking. If it's back by the trans, it's one of the items I stated. You'll have to peek around and see if you can find the source.

If you cracked the radiator, I guess the intrnal trans cooler could be leaking coolant into the trans, which is really REALLY bad.

Been a freak about checking transmission fluid ever since I got the rebuilt one and seen no changes there. No problems with overheating or anything like that. Leak only started once I noticed the plastic tank was empty and filled it back up.

Well, you never know. Funny things can happen. You still need to check for leaks.....

What's this plug you speak of? Also leak seems to be on right side of undercarriage.

Freeze plugs are on the side of the motor, 3 per side, 2 per head if memory serves. They're steel plugs hammered into the side of the motor. They're actually used to get the sand out from the casting process, but should the coolant freeze, usually they also blow out. They're steel and have been know to rot over time, especially with poor coolant service practices. Get under the car and look up on the side of the block just above the oil pan. You will see round metal plugs about 1.5" in diamater running the length of the block. If one of those is leaky, you'll see it.

The three round spots on the side of the block in this pic are the plugs.

Why is it so bad if one of those is leaking?

because where they are makes it a bitch to replace half the time. The one right over the frame crossmember sucks hardcore. Getting them out isnt bad, driving one in is the hard part. That, and if one really lets go, it'll puke all the coolant out in a bigass hurry.

the heater core may also be leaking.....the drain is on the firewall by the transmission.......if theres coolant dripping out the evaporator drain, it's a heater core

Haven't been able to check anything out yet, had to drive her to work today couldnt pass up the money. Work was kinda fun too, a BK commercial w/ a stuntman dressed as the King on a pocketbike, Chicken and Whopper jr. were there too. Anywho no overheating nor even any hint of it, and before going home despite massive apparent coolant loss under the car the radiator didnt need much to top it off. Made it home no problem.

My question is in addressing my problem are there any upgrades/ replacements I should consider? New radiator, electric fan, water pump? Def. going to install new therm.
