    Another Part ID Question

Well,I've had the LTD grounded since thursday, while I changed the Lower Intake Gaskets,to fix that damn coolant leak coming from the back, and also did some various other things, all went well except.

I ended up breaking the old CTS while I was trying to remove it,no big deal,I can afford another one,got the block piece off anyway. Now the CTS,whats left if it,is stuck in the Heater Hose Block Piece.

I've soaked it in PB Blaster for 24 Hours, put it in a Vice, and turned with all my weight and strength, and it still will not budge a F*^#ing mm,it has to be seized.I got so pissed at it trying to get it loose I bent the hell out of the place where the heater hose connects to the piece, pretty much ruining it.

My question: Now,I need to know what exactly this piece is called,or referred to as,at the parts store.Or can you even buy these pieces new anymore?

I know I can get them all day long at the boneyard, but those pieces are old as well, and most likely the CTS is not gonna come out of those eather.Damn I really hope you can buy this piece new,My car is Grounded and I have no way to get anywhere, until this is fixed.

I don't know the name, but I would just go to the junk yard and find one I could get the part out of. I changed my sensor and it came right out. Or just take the part to the part store and ask them.

Interesting. It must have been a bad weekend for the CTS. I swaped the one out of my '87 to my '88, and they both came out without any problems. Just a big old 1in box-end wrench and they both came right out.

I think Advance calls it a "Metal Temperature Switch", it is also under Temperature Switches, Ready-Aire PN 5009.
Napa also carries it, under Coolant Temp Sensor. It helps if you ask for a temperature sensor rather than a switch.

Official Ford nomenclature for the sensor is the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT). Don't have a clue what they officially call the pipe nipple bit. If you are going to attempt to get a new one, you're probably looking at a dealer part, and any good parts guy should be able to find it by describing it. Chances of them actually having one are not so great tho.

If its stuck in there, stick the fitting in a vise, get a torch, and a large pair of pliers. Get it hot and it should come right apart. If it flat refuses, go visit the junkyard and stick the box end of the wrench of a few sensors. Find one that moves and the pipe isn't all eaten up, and snatch it.

                @ Murph

Well, just as I expected, the Rocket Scientists at advance where about as helpful as tits on a bull.$18 for a new CTS or ECT,wasn't too bad though.

I did'nt even think to take a torch to it and heat it up before trying to get it out,I probably could have saved the connector piece that way. It's pretty much done for now though.

My crap Haynes repair manual only shows the 86 SEFI setup,so it doesn't show the same piece as the 87,but after looking at the 86 dual pipe setup,I think thats the route I'm going. The 86 dual pipes completely eliminate that connector piece, and the CTS just plugs into the pipe itself, actually looks about 10 times cleaner.I like a clean engine bay,so it should be worth the extra trouble when changing the heater hoses each time.

The yard almost always has 86 Boxes,so I'll pull a few of them and hopefully I'll get one that doesn't leak.If I come up empty handed I'll buy the one off of you scott.

Thanks for all your help mangs.

dual pipes are evil, especially the hoses in the back behind the intake

I've never had issues with the hoses on the back of my double pipes. Yeah they're a little tricky to get the hoses on but if you use some di-electric grease on the hose before installing it, its not bad to work with at all. Mine have been on there since I got the car, haven't had one blow up yet. Mustangs and Mark VII also use basically this setup, but the one tube is angled a little different in the front I think.

Just make sure you use some pipe dope on the threaded part where it goes into the lower intake otherwise it will never seal.

Let me just say, what a PITA to install this thing was.I didn't realize beforehand the return fuel line had to be disconnected to install it.Since I had already hooked the lines back up,and returned the special tool back to the store,I couldn't disconnect the lines again.Had to end up pulling the PS valve cover and finagling it in.Got it installed though, and after a Shitload of heater hose Origami,I got it completely good, and leak free.

                              On teh Road Again......
