Concerning Scott's suggestion about the 31-spline limo rear end: It all depends on what tires Tom uses on the car. A few suggestions:

                1. Aluminum diff cover, from T/A or Ford Motorsport. The ring gear caps are bad about breaking on the 8.8. I have broken several myself. This is a good patch.

                2. Powertrax or Detroit locker variant. Makes the car behave weird on acceleration, but nothing else will do that well here.

                3. Aftermarket axles.

                4. Axle housing braces. This runs from the ends of the axle tubes, to the front of the pinion snout. They make them for Mustang rear ends, but the GM will need to be custom-fabbed. This keeps the axles housing ends from trying to bend forward.

                5. Weld the housing tubes securely to the center section. There are only two pins, top and bottom, that hold the axle tube in place on an 8.5/8.8.

Provided you get good aftermarket gears, the 8.8 should hold up now, unless you are going to try to launch hard with slicks on a prepped surface.

Concerning headers: Shorties for a 514/521? At least a 2" long tube, a stepped 2" into 2 1/16" would be ideal, most aftermarket shorty 460 tubes are 1 7/8", a bit small for a stroker 460, even a bit small for a regular 460 (unless it is a torque/towing motor). If you are going to spend the money on a stroker kit, then don't skimp on headers.
Give me long tubes, or give me death!

They would consider it an illegal modification. Though there might be some shops out there that still give out passing inspection stickers for a fee.

NJ inspection is a joke mang, they don't even open the hood down here. If its got cats, and passes the sniffer they don't even care. If you're having problems getting it passed up there, come down here where nobody cares. Mine passed with flying colors with the cam a tooth off, massive blowby, and no smog pump. It failed for the stupid shift indicator not working right, and rust on the driver's side "because a gas attendant might get cut". I slapped a stainless trim panel over the hole on the driver's side, left the hole on the passenger side alone, and zip tied the shifter thing to work. Passed with no trouble. they even looked at the rust hole on the passenger side and checked the OK box. This was state inspection too, if I paid, I could get anything passed. My Beetle used to get a bought sticker every year because the carbs were so bad on it I couldn't get it to pass idle emissions.
