    performance help for 84 gm

my grand marquis is running horrible and I am looking to increase the performance out of the motor. Are there any things I can do on a small budget? I have been told to swap the heads, so how much would that cost

Welcome to the site...I'm sure people will chime in soon to help you out, but it might help to list what kind of problems you're having as far as why/how it is running bad, etc. Just a bit of advice. Welcome!

      Welcome!

Well goddamn, I got an 84 GM too! Prob one of my most worthwhile mods were exhaust, and the carb swap, as well as an MSD 6AL ignition.

Justin (phayzer5) in order to coax the maximum out of his stock mystery '84 shortblock, we used an edelbrock 600 4bbl, performer RPM intake, ported E7 heads, and a cam to get pretty good performance...

Yes, convert to carb. CFI sucks.

Also, gears and a good transmission make a difference too.

like the old timers used to say "All the power in the world wont do you any good if you cant put it to the ground"

      Well said.

        welcome to gmn!
try and get the car to run decent with stock parts before modifying the engine........the cars do have potential for more power, but you dont wanna go throwing parts at a car and it still doesent run right

how much $$ do you have to work with, and can you do your own work????
Then we can give more accurate advice. Bottom line is, theres not much you can do unless you get fat paychecks. there are lots of affordable mods to do, dont get me wrong. but the ones that make you go fast cost the most

Yes, define "not running right", and what work has been done on it to attempt to correct the problem.

            And welcome!

I've got a lot more skinny ones into mine. $100 car with probably ~$1500 into it in the last 2 months.

                  Here is one idea.

Swap in a lower milage Explorer of Mountaineer 5.0L from the wreckers. Sell the EFI parts off the Explorer motor and convert to carburation. If you decide to keep the stock Explorer camshaft, you could run an Edelbrock performer and an Edelbrock 600 carb. Get a distributor with a steel gear for the hydraulic roller cam like the Summit HEI. Run take-off Mustang headers and H pipe. To keep it simple, you could run a stock replacement mechanical fuel pump. Your CFI motor should have an eccentric you can use, even though it doesn't have a mechanical fuel pump. On many CFI timing covers, you can finish cutting the hole where the mechanical fuel pump goes. You could replace the in-tank pump with a length of hose like Phayzer did. Lokar makes a kit to hook up the AODs Throttle Valve to a carburator.

Should not cost all that much and if the junkyard motor is fresh, should last a long time.

Just one way to do it.

                  Tom :broccoli:

the engine misses and it feels like the engine is losing power
I'am hoping to stay under 2000 dollars.
And I can do all of the work on my own

you could build a junkyard motor for 2 grand, and have a REALLY quick car...

Tom just stated the best way to do so...
