    1991 MGM rear sway bar

    Hi, just joined this diatribe!

    I have a 1991 MGM-LS with 21k original miles.

Looking for a rear sway bar and some reccomendations on shocks. I'm looking at the Monroe "sensa-tracs" for shocks, but cannot locate a rear sway bar.

    Any ideas??

    Thanks

    David

For the sway bar hit up the junkyard. I'm currently running koni's for a mustang in the rear and love em. Fairly stiff though.

Welcome!! For rear sway bars I would look at waggins or police cars in the junkyard. Any from 79 to 91 will work on there. You might have to drill holes, you might not.

You can only find the 1" rear swar bars on old police cars, regular sedans and waggins only rarely can be found with the smaller rear sway bar, not all of them got them.

Nice car and welcome to GMN. for the sway bar, 79-91 Crown Vic, LTD, Grand Marquis , Colony Park, and Country Squire bar will work so that opens up your possibilities. When you get a chance, take a peek under your car and have a look at the rear control arms/trailing arms. If they have 2 holes on each side then you are already set for a civilian bar that bolts up in minutes. I finally just put one on my car, which already had both holes on each side, and though it's not the cop, wagon, or tow bar it did make a big difference. Also I didn't upgrade the front except for new Moog end links and didn't want to throw the cars geometry way off (very stiff rear, more sway in the front). If you do opt to the large bar you may need or want the correct control arms which are thicker gauge, have the holes, and bent lip to accommodate the bigger bar. To start off, let us know if the arms on your car have the holes there already whether its 1, 2, or none.

                Beautiful car!

As mentioned, the '79-'91 police cars are the only place to get a 1in rear sway, unless someone has retrofitted a civilian car. Upgrade the front as well with a 1 1/8in solid from a police car or early tow-package car, or a 1 3/16 hollow from a wagon. Just keep in mind that sway bars aren't going to make much difference with those whitewall tires.

As for shocks, I ran KYB GR-2's on my '82. They were squishy and no better than the 25 year old OEM hydraulic units. I'd go for a KYB Gas-A Just spec'd for the cop car for better performance. I've heard good things about newer police car shocks (I think 2002 is the year you need to order, someone else probably knows for sure.)
