    Missing when coasting

When I let off the gas the car stumbles and misses and the AOD begins to hunt between 3 and OD. But under acceleration it is smooth and doesnt seem to be lacking power. I had a worsening exhaust leak for about a year and I thought it was the culprit, then after it was fixed it persisted. Im not sure if it is the fuel filter, fuel pump (I do run out of gas frequently, sunken fuel float), or something else. The plugs, wires and cap/rotor have been replaced recently. I am begining to tire of the poor milage and missing and dont want the missing to begin to happen all the time. If any one has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated.

Check the fuel vapor return system. It normally only activates when coasting. The system consists of a vacuum line that runs forward under the ac compressor to a solenoid hanging near the passenger side fender. From the solenoid there is a rubber hose that goes to the charcoal canister under the battery, and a hose from the canister to a metal line that ends just forward of the passenger side motor mount. If the canister or the lines are cracked, it will suck air and might contribute to this problem.

Also, change your fuel filter. Despite what people say, running out of gas doesn't somehow suck more crap into the system. The pump draws from the bottom, so any garbage in the tank is about as likely to be sucked up when full or empty but if the filter is old, it wouldn't hurt to change it. I'd also do a tune-up if it hasn't been done in the recent past. Checking/repairing the PCV system wouldn't be a bad idea either, and if the upper intake is really gooey inside from oil being pumped into that breather tube, give it a good cleaning.

if the EGR is clogged open it will cause stumbling when your off the gas (while it should be closed), it wouldn't be as noticeable when accelerating since the egr normally opens while accelerating anyway.

The fuel filter did the trick. The stumble is gone and some power has returned. Thanks!
