got my fuel pump and sending unit changed

the car is running like a champ, finally stopped bogging out on me.....now....i filled the car up and the gauge does not want to pass a 1/4 tank.

is this a faulty sending unit or did they install it incorrectly?

sounds like they screwed up on the install or bent the float rod on the sender when installing... makes me wonder where they got the sending unit and fuel pump since most places mark them as being single unit and not separated like our cars are.

Check the plug to make sure the connections are clean and tight first. Also, if you paid someone to do this, take it back and tell them it's not right.

the sender is nowhere near the fuel pump on a box.........the fuel tank does not need to come out to replace the sender, you just need to be low on fuel.........new senders are pricey, sometimes the float goes bad.......hopefully senders arent made of unobtanium yet

so they checked everything out at the shop, according to them everything is installed correctly, yet when i fill up the needle does not want to pass a half a tank, is it possible theres a problem with the needle itself?

It's possible. Is the needle hitting the face plate of the gauge?

On the older mercs, you had to pull the headlamp switch knob to allow the trim to come off. Then once that's out of the way, you can access the instrument cluster, which you will most likely have to pull out to replace the fuel gauge if that's what you plan on doing.

It's possible that the sender is the wrong sender, giving off the wrong resistance to the gauge only making it top off at half a tank on the gauge. When you burnt some of the gas off, did the gauge move at all?

yes it works fine after a half a tank, it starts to drop accordingly, but you're right, might be the wrong sender
