I'd give it about a minute if the engine is 'cold' during summer....and 5 minutes during winter.

Or, just hammer the fucking thing the moment it lights off.

quick n00b question: it's normal when you start for the car to rev a little high for a few seconds, then come back down to normal (well, normal when cold is a bit higher than normal when hot) idle RPMs?

          yup..

give the car atleast enough time to build up oil pressure and off you go. it's not necessary to let it sit any longer and just wastes fuel.

Once the idle settles down i am on my way, unless i am in a rush.

Oil seems to stay cleaner at every change if I let it get to operating temp before taking off.

In the summer I'll let it warm up for a couple min. For the first drive of the day. After that I just start it, wait about 30 seconds than take off.
Up here in ND, in the winter though, I let the thing run for 15 minutes before I drive it. But that's when its below 32* . I like the water tep at least 160* when I leave the house when its cold out. Don't like drivin a car with gloves on, n if my hands get cold, I didn't let it warm up enough. Lol I usually have to put cardboard in front of the radiator in the winter so it stays warm runnin down the hwy.

Takes a little under 15 seconds for the entire engine to get oil pressure.

I let mine sit until I see the temp gauge start to move, usually takes a minute or two. On my Silverado I have to do that or it'll stall with my carb issues, plus I like to give the oil time to heat up so in any car I drive i'll let it sit at least a minute. In the morning i'll get ready for work then go out and start it, come back inside to brush my teeth and 5 minutes later it's warm enough to drive.

i let it warm up for a min atleast, on cold/freezing days longer

heres a quick question, when i do just hop in it and go cold the motor feels much more powerful and the power breaks seem more touchy and sensetive, like its pulling alot more vaccum. is my timing off or something?
