Well... assuming the CFI unit is the same and you can use the same injectors, it would mostly consist of replacing everything electrical (most of it is easy bolt-on stuff) including the ECM and whole wiring harness. You would need vacuum harnesses too unless you wanted to scratch plumb it all (its a mess, but not too bad if you are good with diagrams). If you dont have emissions/inspections you could leave out the smog and egr stuff saving some trouble.
Again you would also need to get a new distributor, and adapting the wiring to EEC-III could be anything from plug-and-play to more of a headache than a CFI to SEFI conversion. I'm not sure exactly whats different electrically outside the engine wiring harness... I do know that the coil wiring on CFI cars is outside the main engine harness, and you would still need the modern coil, so there could be more wiring changes (i think the old coil had some kind of resistor?) that may need to be dealt with.
Honestly it would be a lot of work that might not even fix the problem, and may even leave you worse off if you happen to get a pad part, or for some screwy reason that got overlooked it just wont work. Then you are left with an even bigger mix-matched mess than when you started... hence the crazy eyes in the last post, lol.
If this is a car you can leave disassembled for a length of time, and you are dead set on converting it to something (meaning you would have a plan 'B' if this doesn't work) it may be worth a shot.
But if this is your daily driver and you only want to deal with this once, a carb swap may be a better route.
I definitely wasn't suggesting putting on a VV carb earlier, there is some OEM plain 2bbl Ford carb that may bolt right to the CFI manifold if I remember right. Something like that you would want to find new if possible - I wouldn't trust a used carb, especially OE ones!Pete ::::>>> resident LED addict and CFI defector LED bulb replacements

Go to EFI or just a standard 2 bbl. It's too much of a headache to convert a EEC-III to an EEC-IV CFI. EFI harness can be had for less than 50 bucks at a junkyard, passenger side exhaust manifold, 10 bucks, upper plenum with throttle body and bracket and lower intake with injectors 30 bucks. The sensors are pretty much self contained on the intake manifolds. And TFI distributor and cap for like 20 bucks at a yard. The fuel lines too. They shouldn't be too much. You'll need the TV cable from whichever year EFI car you get it from. I'd personally recommend an '86 since they don't have the bushing that's prone to failure. Also moves the coil away from the engine (One year thing). It's all up to you though. But if you want reliability, get away from the CFI and go to EFI, or dare I say a carburetor.
As for the 2bbl, I would assume the canadian panthers of pre '86 would have the carb you're looking for.Last edited by 86VickyLX; 02-27-2010, 08:05 PM.

How do you know how hard it is? Have you done it? It could be a piece of cake...
And $30 for an upper and lower intake with injectors and TB?? What junkyard are you going to? I wanna go there.
Prices vary greatly... those are a little unrealistic... I paid $85 for mine w/o goodies and was pleased.
And for the last time... 86 parts suck and are hard to find!! And you realize a brass bushing is easier to find than an 86 cable, and takes care of this problem which makes you think an 86 cable is speshul :pPete ::::>>> resident LED addict and CFI defector LED bulb replacements

there is an article on lincolnsonline.com about switching from eec3 to eec4 cfi. Personally I wouldn't bother. if I was going to all that work, I'd put real EFI on it and be done with it.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

ok i was told by my Auto Mechanic instructor that a general tune may fix the hesitation(i doub't it). He told me to replace all the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and the rotor. Do you think this could fix the problem.
I tell you i want to get a red distributor cap and yellow spark plug wires. gonna look Sick.

If the ignition parts are old, they're automatically suspect. You won't be hurting anything by replacing old stuff, just get good wires, and stock plugs. They like Motorcraft plugs, and if you can get them, Motorcraft or Ford Racing wires have been well proven to work correctly.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
