Ever heard of a 5.0L that takes 4 qts of oil??

Hey guys. I have a strange conundrum ever since I bought my '90 CV. I've always put 5 quarts of oil in per change, but there's a discrepancy in the owner's manual and operating guide. And, as a matter of fact, my dipstick. Here's the deal: every 302 I've ever heard of takes 5 qts. The owner's manual says 5 qts. I've got the standard 2-drain pan. No problem so far. The kicker: my "1990 Operating Guide" clearly says 4.0 quarts! Furthermore, when I put 5 quarts in, my dipstick reads way over full. I've been driving on 5 quarts for over a year, and haven't had any problems. Has anyone heard of a 302 that takes 4? Anyone else come across this weirdness in the literature? Some pics to prove it:

initially after I fill my 302 it will read way over full... but crank it and let it run a moment and then check it with the engine off and it's spot on full.

Yeah, it is bizarre. 5 quarts in mine always reads too full. My dipstick is probably wrong. But it's always been weird and a bit troubling to know that both my dipstick and one of my two documents that came with the car are telling me that I'm driving around with too much oil...

some of the dipsticks were mis-marked... there was a TSB about the problem.
ALL 5.0L engines should take 5 qts of oil.

could simply be a mis-print in the operators manual.

Oil filter?? Just kidding, yeah, I always change the filter too...not a dumb question 86--you never know, I could be an ultimate n00b (not just on GMN)!

how much remains in there when you pull both drain plugs and let it bleed dry? i thought the dipstick was a bit screwy on mine because 4.8 litres put it WAY over full

For the record, if you don't know what normal for your car is, next time you do an oil change, after you put your 5 quarts in and run it to allow circulation through the oil filter and what not, and then a little bit of time to allow the oil to settle back down after you shut it off, look at your dipstick, mark where the level i and that's your full mark.

4 qts + 1 for the oil filter... even if you chose to do only 4 qts total you'd still be ok.

                      any less is not good.
