    No second gear???

Is there a way with the AOD to select second gear?(shift kit??) I will be towing a trailer and having control of second gear would be of benefit pulling hills. With only O, D, and 1 available, it will be shifting willy nilly.

i don't think a shift kit will allow you to select 2nd. the purpose of a shift kit is to tighten up the shift points. the stock setup on an aod is to appease old geezers who don't want to feel the car shift. to creat smooth transitions when it shifts, the stock setup actually slips. slipping creates friction, friction creates heat, heat kills tranny . if you haven't already i'd put the money into a decent tranny cooler. that would help immensely. Scott (Lincolnmania) has one from an rv iirc on his town car

You could do the 1 d 1 shuffle but its not recommended.

actually the 1 d 1 shuffle doesnt hurt it, it's designed to hold second gear in 1 if over ~15mph

I have to do it all the time if the road i'm on is >15<30 mph

start in 1, get up to about 20mph, move shifter to D. After it shifts, bring it back down to 1 and it will hold in second gear

Will this work on the fly?

I think its Lentech that has a redesigned valvebody to give the 1-2-3/OD shift pattern you're looking for.

What's the problem with towing in 3rd again? Seems to me the decreased strain on the engine would more than "pay for" the increased strain on the direct clutch pack. There IS a balance here, and overdrive is IT. Don't use it.

I will use third for normal towing, but on a hill you will need to downshift and sometimes first is too low and third too high, need a balance.

Just curious how the trans temp gauge is hooked up? There is no sending unit. Is it inline, or is a hole drilled in the pan?

My wide ratio trans is a OD-2-1 pattern, so there is a way to do it, but it's not a kit, it's a matter of modding the valve body and trans case. And with a stock AOD, you also don't necessarily have to do a 1-D-1 shuffle. If you're going above about 30mph you can go from D to 1 and it will go directly into 2nd.

                          Won't drop into first?

have to test that, sounds like the answer that I can afford

you can put an aftermarket temp sender anywhere you want - I plan to put mine in the pan.
