I have a question about my timing.

Is it possible to advance my timing? I know that ford retards their engines and i was wondering if it was possible to do this to get a little more performance by doing this.

Absolutely! 12* seems to be a good spot for a stock lopo. Mine ran great at 12*.

Connect a timing light to the proper place. Disconnect spout connector going to distributor. Start the car, and check initial timing. You should be seeing about 10 degrees BEFORE top dead center on the balancer. If so, loosen the hold down on the distributor and slowly turn it clockwise (IIRC) until you see 12 degrees on the balancer come into view with the arrow. Once this is done, re-tighten the dist. hold down and recheck with the timing light to be sure it did not move on you while tightening.

Once verified, shut the car off, reconnect the spout connector and fire it back up. Take it for a drive and see what you get. If you get pinging under a load then you may have to back it off some as it is too far advanced and you risk screwing up the pistons this way.

          Clockwise is correct.

ok thanks guys. second question would it be possible to advance it even further with better pistons? and if so what type of pistons would you suggest?

What you'll be doing is searching experimentally for the point at which your car has best power and efficiency without pinging. The amount of initial advance, as indicated on the balancer, may vary from one vehicle to another.

Even with forged or high-silicon hypereuctectic pistons, you'll want to set your tune so you don't ping.

you could power time it. have someone braketorque the car while they are doing this turn the dist till it spark knocks then turn it back till it stops.

That works, but its a real good way to get run over if your helper's foot slips off the brake. I personally don't trust anyone enough behind the wheel to ever attempt it.

Running a higher octane gas will help with the pinging... I have mine at 16 and no pinging on regular.

Yeah, I know of no need to run most normal engines on anything but regular.

Man my wagon was at 16*, and unless I was running 91 it pinged like a bitch. I've got it turned down to about 8*, and it still pings on 87 when I get on it hard.

gas sucks anymore. its hard to get a situation with no pinging. if you can run with that much timing and have no pinging you are lucky. most cars ping anymore under normal driving conditions

 Very bad substandard gas in your area or something?

The only time I've experienced real pinging was with 10:1 compression, iron heads, 87 octane, and about 46 degrees total advance coming in around 2500-3000rpm.

This is just patently wrong. If your shit pings under normal driving conditions, something is wrong/broken/fucked up.
