    What Is This I Don't Even 2.0

Canadian Tire wants to charge me 5.5 hours labour to replace my oil pan.

How much time SHOULD it take for someone to do this to a 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis LS?

    I feel poor now.

I think I paid $4/500 over ten years ago to replace the pan gasket on my 89 MGM. The guys around here can chime in, but I know the motor needs to be jacked up off the motor mounts to do it. No small job.

5.5 hours may be a bargain.

Pan or pan gasket? Even just the gasket is a big job, replacing the whole pan might require having the motor all the way out.

PS... I would never let a tire chain do a job that big.

5.5 hours is a bargain.......that is one of those jobs where the labor guide is way the heck off.

find a little mom and pop repair shop that has a good rep, i would never never take my car to a chain store for repairs other than tires or alignment, and they can even screw that up

i'll do it for 300 plus parts but it would cost u more than that for gas to get here lol

Anyways, the car is currently having its oil plug rethreaded. Or the oil pan is being rethreaded for a new plug. Or something.

Apparently, there's 2 plugs on the pan - the rear one is the culprit. Someone used it to do an oil change and stripped the threads or something.

He says if doing this doesn't completely fix the problem he'll "silicone the shit out of it". When I brought up the concern of never being able to change the oil again, he pointed out I still had a front plug...

you need to always open both drain plugs when changing the oil.....the front sump only holds about a quart

Run away from canadian tire. People work there because they can't work elsewhere. They're mostly very young (i am too) which means they've likely never worked on a car like yours before.

That said, 5.5 hours ischeap, but keep in mind that you'll have someone working for 7+ hours on your car for 5.5 hours pay. They will likely be angry and in a hurry.

Frankly there are two viable options for getting these old cars repaired properly:
Learn to do it yourself or find a shop that works on a lot of similar cars.

I once did a job interview for canadian tire, and the boss went out of his way to explain why their standards were higher than the other franchises.

Well currently I deal with a shop that charges $98 per hour for labour, and so far they've done decent work on my vehicle.

I was supporting my friend who opened his own shop a year and a half ago, and I was always promoting his business by sending people his way. He charges $80 per hour for labour.

Sadly I refuse to deal with him anymore because he backburnered me one time too many.

uh, guys it's friggin silicone. The plug will come out again. It's not like some retard and his kid did to a camaro that came into JL with a bent up oil pan that I denied service on. They came back with a big wad of JB weld OVER the drain plug.... I laughed my ass off.

And 5.5 is an incredible bargain.
