    cone air filter?

I'm tempted to do this just to free up some space under the hood (I also may have fucked up the bracket for the original air box). What cone filters work with our cars and can be put together fairly simple and cheap? Looking at paper filters, not K&N or anything? I looked at the Fram cone filters at Kmart, but they didn't seem to have a decent base to mount it to. All info is appreciated.

I'm running a chrome MAC 5.0L Mustang CAI kit (just the elbow and an "Import Car" conical air filter). Yes, it's sucking in underhood heat, but I "hear" air being sucked into the motor now. It looks a whole lot better than the factory, flat "Robbie the Robot arm" look!!! (I'll post some pics soon). I'm probably going to paint the chrome elbow "black" to make it look plastic.

A little advice: Imports have half the engine we do. Make sure you get the biggest filter you can find.
2011 Mustang GT Premium, MT82, Kona/Saddle, HIDs, 3.73s, 19s, hood/side stripes, UPR 1.5" springs with adjustable panhard bar, and UMI solid LCAs and relocation brackets.
1992 Explorer Eddie Bauer, slight lift, 34s, and A/C...
1979 Bronco Custom, 351M/C6/NP205, 4" lift, 35s, lots of fender trimming.

This is what kind of reusable "Import" air filter I'm running, but it's got a 3" outlet into the chrome pipe.

Yeah, I got one of those too - Spectre Performance filter, Autozone special, even comes with the oil to lube it after washing. It can also be had with a bigger 4" outlet and several reducing spacers (down to 3.5" and 3") to fit different intake tubes, and it also comes in chrome and groovy blue, so you even have a choice of color. My current intake consists of the stock rubber elbow, an 11" long PVC pipe with 3"innner and 3.5" outer diameter, and one of those filters in red - cheap, but with the power my engine has I probably don't need much better setup.

This is how it looked with a 3"-long connecting pipe, the filter now sits right in front of that fat bunch of cables with black plastic wrapper - you can probably move yours even further up, I had the air compressor in the way.

Thanks Tom, the wires are routed much better now, and the whole engine bay looks cleaner as a whole. But can you find the vacuum reservoir can?

Jon, stop drooling please, my engine isn't anywhere near as clean and shiny as yours.

Thanks for the info. Depending on what comes up tomorrow, I just might try to get the factory air box back in and leave it at that for now.

The metal base for the factory airbox can be held to the manifold by only two bolts without any problem, I ditched mine only cause it was getting in the way all the time and I wanted something a little less messy.

I'll sell you mine for $20.00. It's a 3" cotton cone for mustang that fit great, but I decided I liked my "sleeper stock look better. My only giveaway now is the headers as you cannot see my afpr on the back of the fuel rail. I believe there is an underhood pic of the Loveboat if you search "loveboat" in rides.

Here's my setup (taken before the 3G alt swap). I don't know if it makes any power, but I feel it looks better than stock. The intake tube could be longer.

I'm going to get a "red" silicone connector and freshen up the underhood area paint. Make it decent looking.

Actually I've been thinking about that - what's the big fuss about CAIs, when so many carbed intakes use exactly hot air?

Those EFI guys are trying to catch up with the awesome power that a carb motor will give ya, even sucking in hot air right off the headers.
