    This is the motor that I have from my '71 Mach 1. Not much else to say about the motor. Throw a set of forged replacement pistons in there which are pretty cheap and plop a good intake and cam on there and you will have a casual 400HP+ motor. Keep the motor below 6500RPM's and you can use the factory rods with ARP bolts. The C-6's usually are found behind the Q code motors in '71. It could have come from anywhere though. The tranny tag will tell.

      Ed, what kind of cam do you recommend for my application?

        First choice would be a hydraulic roller cam. I would have Crane or Comp Cams custom cut one.
        For a flat tappet cam, I was happy with the performance and idle of the Crane 524421. 288/292 (226/230) duration and .528/.536 lift. It has a lope, but I was running a factory converter and power brakes and had no problems.

          People on other forums said I should be "hung by the balls" for thinknig about a hydralic roller cam in a close chambered cleveland...

              I jumped in there to see exactly what he thinks that the problem is. I am expecting some level of flaming to occur. If a hydraulic flat tappet works well, a hydraulic roller will work better. For a moderate RPM motor, the couple of HP difference between a solid and hydraulic roller cam isn't worth the hassle of having to check lash often to me. It is not like you want to turn 4's in the 1/4...

                  Do you want a street/strip car or a full out bogie drag car? Don't get hung up on "best". Everything is a compromise with a budget street car. If a moderate cam doesn't give you enough power, then spray it. Don't wreck your streetability by going with a monster cam and being forced to turn above 6500RPM's.

                      I have been in 7000RPM cars. To me, it makes no sense to be spinning the engine all of the time on the street. If you can build the motor to make power below 6500, it is much more pleasant to drive. The cam I put in the 429SCJ is a 6500RPM cam. It has 296/300(236/240) duration and .556/.563 lift and it needs pretty steep gears. It is almost too much cam for a casual street car. Even with your overdrive, I would recommend against that big of a cam. That cam is lumpy in a 429. It would be even worse in a 351 cube motor. If you wanted to run 4.11 gears and didn't care about nice manors, then I would say "Go for it!" so far, that doesn't seem to be the case.

                          That is an alright cam, but I am a fan of split profile cams in Fords with crappy exhaust ports. You should almost be able to get a custom grind for that $.

                            Perhaps it will be time to call Comp Cams when I get to that point...

                              All this talk about engine, and I'm just amazed to see a heavy-duty small-block C-6.

                              I have more BB HD C-6s than any one person should have...didn't even know they made a HD SB C-6!
