    Butyl tape

Damn the messy gooey factory butyl tape.

Is there any after-market stuff that is close to the OEM stuff?

Urethane structural adhesive is what is used in modern vehicles. It's much easier to use and requires a caulking gun IIRC.

The local glass shop gave me a few rolls for free when I needed some - they throw the stuff away that comes with some glass and use their own, so they wound up with lots of leftovers...
Its like the OEM stuff - but BE MODEST with it if you use it around exterior panels... it will run when it gets hot.

It can be messy if you're not careful, but it works great.

Doesn't that stuff need to be heated, or is that only for use in the winter? When the guy replaced my windshield, he pulled the tube of whatever goo out of a heater but it was done in cold weather.

That's just so it stays soft and easy to work with in cold conditions. It'll thicken up in the cold and make it a pain in the ass to use.

I've decided to go with purchasing what OEM or NOS parts I can get for the car, then for any of my other ideas, draft plans and have stuff fabricated custom.

I've had some exp with CAD and other programs and technology, and pretty good with reverse engineering and conceptual design when I want to. Especially the difficult stuff to find.

To answer your question, I would like to stay with the OEM factory sealants if possible.
