I have been toying with getting a set of those big old plus sign shaped tap handles and putting one on my shifter in the hillbilly suv.

Anything???? Try a small diameter crystal ball of some sort. Ok, so that's not going to happen. However, you could have a resin ball with something in it, IE a ford emblem or something.

Could always do something totally wierd, use the head from a decoy or something. Just imagine riding around shifting with a duck's head. I bet not too many people have one of those as a shifter handle.

I should have said "small rope" instead of shoe string. You'd have to tie quite a few shoestrings together to fill up a cyl. but at leat y'all grasped the concept
