no need to weld if you are installing stock dual exhaust parts it all clamps and bolts together.......you will however need three universal exhaust hangers.
tools you need:
jack and stands
hacksaw or sawzall to cut old exhaust
9/16" wrench and socket for clamps and flanges
1/2" wrench to bolt hangers to the frame of the car
1986 lincoln towncar signature series. 5.0 HO with thumper performance ported e7 heads, 1.7 roller rockers, warm air intake, 65mm throttle body, 1/2" intake spacer, ported intakes, 3.73 rear with trac lock, 98-02 front brake conversion, 92-97 rear disc conversion, 1" rear swaybar, 1 3/16" front swaybar, 16" wheels and tires, loud ass stereo system, badass cb, best time to date 15.94 at 87 mph. lots of mods in the works 221.8 rwhp 278 rwt

In addition to being able to use the Lincoln H pipe or not, I was wondering about muffler sizes - Do I just buy any offset 2" in/out that I want? What does the length of the muffler have to do with it? If it's too big, would I just be cutting length off of the end of the H pipe or tails to make it fit?sigpic

A list of the parts and crap I need would be a good thing to make up, I think
parts:
- H pipe
- 2x tailpipes
- 2x mufflers
- three universal hangers
- anything I am missing?
tools:
jack and stands
hacksaw or sawzall to cut old exhaust
9/16" wrench and socket for clamps and flanges
1/2" wrench to bolt hangers to the frame of the car
H pipe question: I'm still wondering about the H pipe compatibility from that 90 5.0 town car, and from 92-97 Aero stuff. Don't know where I read that it would work but I definitely saw it somewhere on here that from the cats back, 92-97 is the same as my car. Wanted to find out about that.
Muffler question - How do I know what I'm shopping for? Going with stock 2" sizes, so do I just look for a 2" in/out offset muffler? I just want some rumble. How do I know what length to go for? Just buy something that's at least a certain size and cut off whatever pipe I don't need on either end of the mufflers?
EDIT: since I'm clamping all of this together and not welding it, do I need slightly different size than 2" so the H pipe and tails will fit inside the ends?
Tailpipe and tip question - Can I just put bigger tips on the stock tails? What do I need to look for when buying these tips? Will they bolt up to the stock tails?Last edited by 1990LTD; 12-18-2009, 10:48 AM.sigpic

I don't know about aero-body H pipes, but one for a Town Car might need to be cut shorter since the Townie's wheelbase is longer.
The stock mufflers use an oval case 19" in length and are 23-25" overall (end of inlet to end of outlet). If you stick with those dimensions, it'll fit almost exactly like stock. Shorter cases are OK (just a little louder), but you may need to add bits of pipe in front of or behind the mufflers. Similarly, bigger inlets or outlets can be dealt with by using either an OD/ID adapter (basically a stubby piece of swaged pipe) or something called a tailpipe or muffler bushing, but that'd be more for if you can't find a good deal on the correct inlet/outlet IDs. I've had success finding generic economy mufflers in a 19" case size as cheap as $19 each (in fact, those are the mufflers I'm using under the Vic right now - they don't sound the very best outside the car, but something nicer like a Walker QuietFlow is more like $70 to $100 each).
As far as inlet/outlet sizing, just make sure that the inlets and outlets are 2" ID. Looking through the Walker master catalog, there are a few applications have the inlet or outlet OD specified instead, and of course those that have a spout or other bent piece of pipe permanently attached as part of the muffler assembly. But if you're sticking to either direct-replacement Vic mufflers or a universal replacement muffler, that probably won't be a big concern.
As far as universal muffler and tailpipe hangers, around here we can get them at any parts store or even many hardware stores since they have so many applications. There are a couple of different basic styles, one with a J-hook that slips under a muffler clamp that's handy for right behind mufflers and one with an integral U-bolt-style assembly that's great for tailpipes.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with tips, but I'm one of those weirdos who like the fact that the stock exhaust is essentially invisible.Last edited by 1987cp; 12-18-2009, 12:06 PM.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

I believe someone posted that the whale h-pipe needs to be narrowed slightly to fit a box. So you would need to cut a small piece of pipe out of the cross part of the H and then have a friend weld it back together or find a piece of pipe that could be clamped over both sides to put it back together. I would hope the cross pipe is a standard exhaust pipe size so it would be easy to find a piece of pipe that could be clamped in.
For the mufflers, if you can find a stock length one that is probably the easiest otherwise farm & fleet (I'd guess you'd have something like a F&F up there) has generic mufflers really cheap that are usually shorter than a stock one and then I just add a piece of pipe to one side to make up for the difference. The ones at F&F I think are made by cherry bomb but are actual mufflers(not glass packs) and the one I put on my shadow sounded pretty good for a cheap muffler on a 4-cylinder. It gave it a deeper tone and not a high pitch ricer sound.'85 Mercury Grand Marquis
only MSD multi-spark so far but hopefully a 351 on the way.

Yes, the Cherry Bomb Turbo II is a pretty decent little oval-case muffler that can be had very cheap. But still look around for a univeral economy muffler in the stock case size, because it just might be lurking somewhere handy, at least in my experience can be priced comparably, and it can save you some hassle during installation.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

I'm not buying stock replacement mufflers from RockAuto, I'm gonna get the cheapest turbo mufflers I can find. I think I understand the ID and OD thing - If a mufflers inlet/outlet are 2" ID, then it'll be no trouble clamping stock pipes on at 2" OD, yeah?sigpic

Would the cheap walker replacement mufflers from RockAuto be any good? I might just go with those for now and if I feel like it at a later date, put something more rumbly on there.
What kind of sound difference will there be between stock single and stock dual? Not much I'd guesssigpic
