Handling Improved for Aero and Whales, pre-'03 (Project Dodge This)

Alright, let's get down to business. My Grand Marquis, for what it is, is a pretty decent handling little automobile. Compared to its rival at the time, the GM B-body, the car's stability is far ahead of its GM rival. That said, it's capable and tuned for a comfortable, VERY comfortable ride, and a decent enough ability to get out of danger's way if a situation occurs. Like an emergency lane change, or a panic stop.

For me, that's not enough. I view driving as more than just a cruise from point A to point B. I like taking back roads, I like carving corners, I like feeling truly alive behind the wheel and one with my machine. That would explain the reasoning behind the 3 GT cars I've owned in the past (a Genesis Coupe R-Spec and two different Supras). At first, I doubted much could be done about the car's handling - then I took a ride in 86VickyLX's '86. Whoa. I wouldn't call his car a track monster, but she can dance if you lead her.

That's a box... but the parts are interchangeable, right? I don't know all of the details - that's why I'm creating this thread.

The idea behind this thread is to gather information to develop a handling package that will hone and tune pre-'03 Panthers to their maximum capability on the street - and maybe even on autocross or track day. I'm including brakes in my search as well - pretty much anything that isn't crazy enough to mandate a frame swap or permanent frame modifications.

Bolt on is the idea. With any luck, I, and anyone else who visits this thread after the upgrades begin, can carve their cake and eat it too.

Let's begin. I'll take the first crack at improving the car's handling here...

-'98-02 Police Interceptor brakes - what's needed for a swap other than just the pads, rotors and calipers - and can I go bigger, without going 100% custom?

big brake swap, 16" wheels for clearance, 17" just to make sure.... stiffer shocks/springs/sway bars... wider tires. Enjoy.

for the most part, that's really all there is to it. You can fabricate and swap in the later style outboard shock rear to get the best chance at good handling, but you can do really well with what's in the aero already.

the big brake swap is well documented in many threads, but I don't think anyone has done an actual write-up. Basically you need the spindles and ball joints to be able to mount the rotors and calipers. I think willwood makes a setup that will bolt onto 98-02, but I can't remember for sure. Nobody does anything for the smaller brakes that I know of except slotted/drilled rotors.

And I'm guessing the highest-rate stuff out there would be whale PI parts...?

PI/civi stuff was all the same starting in 92 or 96 or something. whales are the same both ways except for some transmission programming. of course with springs, anything can be custom fit so you could make it rock solid, but it would make the ride harsh.

Addco sway bars, poly bushings, stiffer springs, Bilstein hd shocks, Red Head steering gear box, bigger wheels and tires, 98-02 brakes.

Now we're talking! I don't plan on adding a single extra pony under the hood until the rest of the chassis is up to snuff, and now I have a shopping cart that I can fill up with suspension goodies.

As the build commences and develops, I'll be sure to document my progress in a more-or-less walk-through-style process. Since the factory springs and shocks are quite worn, they'll be the first targets to knock out.

Oh, and Trin's clunky end links up front.

            Stay tuned.

              Yeah.
Use Energy Suspension 4.3150G or R. G for Black, R for Red. I went black with powder coated uppers and lowers.

Side question. Ryan, Did you reuse the nut that secures the upper control arms? I thought you weren't suppose to reuse that nut? I heard something about them backing out and being one time use... or was that just for box control arms?

                  I reused it.
If it backs out, I'll get new nuts.
You,also have to reuse the shells for the control arms.
I'll make a write-up this weekend about the removal and install.
                  I have tons of pictures.

keep an eye on reused nuts. One of mine backed off and fell off and one bushing went bye bye. The other 3 were good. When you put the nuts back on, if they resist being put back on... they will probably stay. if they just spin on the threads before you tighten it down... it will back off.

Looking forward to the write up. I picked up the bushings for my car and plan on swapping them out later in the summer.

I've been buying these parts over the course of a couple months, planning ahead.

It probably could be done during a day, more like a weekend.
Mine took a week because I powder coated the arms and did some rust removing/proofing at the same time.
Also, it now handles like amazing. It also tells me how bad I need to do the bushings, struts, and springs in the rear. I was in a long sweeping turn, and I cranked it quite hard. It felt amazingly solid. But I could feel the back of the car rolling to the right, and it felt like the rear was going to let go and swing out at any moment.
                              So, rear suspension is next.
