    new '98 Marquis from DC

hey folks, im 25 from DC and I just received a blessing in the form of this '98 Marquis w/ 96xxx miles on it. It has been passed down to me as a gift from my grandfather. I believe he was second owner and has put only 30k miles on it since '09. Since driving for about a week now i have noticed the only mechanical issue is that the car makes a winding noise when i turn the steering wheel. Also the vinyl top is peeling off (see pic) which i really would love to fix, the windshield wiper blades are rusting, and i have a blown out door speaker but regardless im loving the car and if you guys have any suggestions on which route to go with taking care of the car im open ears. thanks! (i will get more pics up as i go along)

    Welcome!

For the whining noise that happens while turning, check the power steering fluid level.
I'm sure someone here will know, but is that top a stock option or was it a dealer add-on?
Other than that it sounds like just minor issues and the car looks in pretty good shape.

That's what I thought. Had it been a stock option I imagine that it would have aged better, but overall it's still a good looking car.

            Welcome!

I had the same style roof on my '97 town car! To fix it, I'd probably check around the area to see if someone can redo or fix the top. Might be a cheap fix or a decent chunk of change. I know the vinyl top replacements can be pretty expensive. I'm not sure how you would go about fixing it yourself though.

I noticed the headlights have a little yellowing to them. You can get this polish stuff from the parts store and they'll clear right back up.

            All in all nice car!

That appears to be a Haartz fabric roof (probably Cambria like my '91 has, which is in no way vinyl and is cared for differently) and will be monstrously expensive to have replaced (many hundreds of dollars). However if you have any good trim places they should hopefully be able to fix it up without replacement.

I've been quoted between $800 and $1200 to replace those kind of tops. It's very labor-intensive due to how the fiberglass under the cloth is held onto the body of the car. If you're handy with a needle and thread, you can sew up some of the holes near the edges and have it look a bit better.

Welcome! Since you received the '98 as a gift, you should spend some money on repairs/up-grades and continue to enjoy it

                    thanks to all of you.

and yes i found something called "Fast Brite" to restore the headlights. As far as the roof goes, im going to get some quotes and jus pay it since this was a gift to me and that tacky tape look is not doing it for me lol. my mechanic should be stopping by this weekend as well.

Might as well pay now to have the top done right. If you wait, water will get under everything and you will really pay later.
